PondWatch Activities

These activities are available in Spanish and English. (Estas actividades son disponibles en español e íngles.)

We will be adding more activities to the PondWatch project in the weeks ahead.

Take a tour of a New England pond and its surrounding ecosystems. Look at the water and the plants and animals living it as well as the trees, plants, and animals that can be seen around the pond.

Visit the pond tour pages frequently to see the changes that occur in and around a New England pond during the seasons.

Microinvertebrates as indicators of water quality

Aquatic Environments - A lesson designed to develop an understanding and gain knowledge about aquatic ecosystems.

Forest in a Jar - The major purpose of this activity is for students to recognize the process of succession.

Introductory Pond Water Quality Study - The major purpose of this activity is for students to increase their environmental awareness.

Mapping Activities - May be used as part of the Terrestrial Ecosystem Tour. There are links to activities for students from grades K-12.

Related Math and Geometry activities - Can be used while studying ecosystems include:

    1.Directions from a Clock Face
    2.Make a Sundial Wristwatch
    3.Longitude from a Stick
    4.Make a Compass with a stick, a string and some rocks
    5.Sun Time - Time on your HANDS
as well as links to geometry activites that will help students to measure the height of trees and buildings!
