Community and Neighborhoods

Students will be working on projects that will enhance their knowledge of the world around them. They will become familiar with the community neighborhood, visit area farms, and learn about the farm products produced in their community. Farm activities and field trips will be used to develop literacy skills. Field trips and related activities include a visit to a local apple orchard and farm. Activities will be directly related to the social studies Curriculum Frameworks.

The kindergarten class took a trip to a local apple orchard to learn about where and how apples grow and also to pick apples. When we returned to the classroom students discussed the apple orchard trip and created apple trees.

Agriculture

Agriculture is a very important part of our world. Most of the foods that we consume are agricultural products. The purpose of this unit is to provide students with an understanding of the agricultural world i.e. farming, planting, dairy farms and the process by which we get our food. Students will learn about these concepts through literature, poetry, music, theater and video. They will participate in grade level activities which will increase their conceptual knowledge about agriculture and further develop language and literacy skills.

El Huerto by Isidrio S‡nchez & Carme Peris, Calabaza, Calabaza by Jean Titherington, Como Son Las Manzanas by Jean Marzollo illustrated by Judith Moffatt.
