The Barred Owl

By Amanda F.

The Barred owl has many physical characteristics. The colors of the Barred Owl are gray brown with white horizontal lines across the belly. An eye on a Barred Owl is usually brown. The beak is yellow and almost covered with feathers. A Barred Owls size is between (40-63 cm) or 16-25 inches long. The voice of the Owl sounds like "Hoo-Hoo WAAHH." They call more during the day then at night. The physical characteristics of a Barred Owl are interesting.

There are many places where the Barred Owl has its habitat. The Barred Owl lives in eastern parts of North America. They nest in deep moist forests, wooden swamps and woodland.

The Barred Owl hunts for their pray. Barred Owls consume rats, squirrels, young rabbits, bats, moles, jays, black birds, and pigeons. The Barred Owl hunts for their prey by sitting on a perch above it's prey, and then they dive upon their food. That's what the Barred Owl consumes.

Males and females breed to have eggs. Males hoot for females and give contact calls. As the females are nesting and protecting the eggs, the males fly out to go get prey for the female to eat. The females lay about 2 to 4 eggs in abondoned crow or hawk nests. Their eggs are white and almost round. It takes about 28 to 30 days for the eggs to hatch. The owls care for their young for about 4 months after they are born. This is all about the Barred Owls when they are breeding.
