Susan Prior

My name is Susan Prior and I am a 4th grade bilingual teacher at the Marsh Grammar School in Methuen. It's exciting for me to be teaching at the Marsh, because I grew up on a street very close to the school. As a child, I never imagined that one day I would be teaching the children (and grandchildren) of some of my former neighbors!

I moved from Methuen to New York City after earning a bachelor's degree in foreign languages from Assumption College. My parents thought that I would only stay there for a short time, but I loved New York so much that I remained for 12 years. While I was there, I earned a master's in applied linguistics from Teachers College, Columbia University, I met my husband, and my daughter was born. My teaching career began in New York, where I taught ESL to adults in a variety of settings.

Once my daughter was born, I began to yearn to live closer to my family, and I convinced my husband (a native New Yorker) to move from "Yankee" to "Red Sox" territory. However, we decided to take a detour back to New England, and spent a year living in Jinan, the capital of Shandong province in the People's Republic of China. There I taught English at Shandong University, an invaluable experience for me both personally and professionally.

Back in the Merrimack Valley, I taught in the TBE program in Lawrence for three years. Now I am at the Marsh, happy to be working with children whose families are from the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Puerto Rico and the U.S.A. I feel very fortunate to be part of a team that is committed to helping all children to be successful learners.
