The Solar System - a student PowerPoint presentation about the Solar System.

Surveys, Graphs, and Tables - Grade four children in the TBE class studied how to read and make graphs. Then, in collaborative work with the computer teachers, they typed their data, then created graphs, and finally they thought of questions they would like their friends to ask about their graphs.

As an assignment, students exchanged papers and answered someone else's questions by looking at the graphs. They had so much fun! They especially liked typing their surveys and questions, and creating the graphs.

 

Landform Research - our students recently completed research on various types of landforms. There are four different types (plains, rivers, deserts and mountains) along with writings displayed for this project.

Snowman

How to Make a Snowman - The students in our class have written "How to Make a Snowman" paragraphs using sequencing words, like First, Then, Next, and Last. They first wrote the paragraphs, then put them into the shape of balls of snow.

This was presented as a lesson at a PBTIL workshop in January by teachers from the Lawrence, MA school system.

We had a lot of fun doing this assignment and hope to finish up the snowmen by adding hats and arms. See what we have done so far.

Acrostics and "I am most thankful for" compositions - About Thanksgiving, and as part of the writing component. Students write in relation to the Holiday. This type of writing helps them follow directions (write the sentence starting with a word beginning with one of the letters of the word THANKSGIVING). This work helps students write compositions with a clear focus, developing the composition with logically related ideas to develop it (Composition Strand, Standard 19 from the Massachusetts ELA Curriculum Frameworks). Students had to use their knowledge of English conventions for sentence structure, usage, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling to edit their writing (Standard 22).

Bio-poems - Part of the writing program, helps students improve self-expression. Related to the ELA Curriculum Frameworks in that they help students identify, analyze, and apply knowledge of the structure, elements, and theme of poetry (Literature Strand, Standard N. 14). The parental/community part is included implicitly in the poems when they write about their family and friends.

 

Our Moon Journal Project - Ancient astronomers learned everything they know about the sky by observing it for many hours, night after night. Many astronomers had no telescopes and relied only on their eyes for their observations. It was their dedication to detail n their observations that gave us the excellent celestial records that we still use today. Now, it is your turn to repeat their efforts as you survey the heavens.
