Plains (The text for the plains was created as a group.)

Plains are flatland. Farmers grow corn and crops in the plains. Animals like the buffalo and cattle eat from the plains. The weather can be hot and cold. There can be tornadoes and flooding rains.

Rivers

The rivers have animals living in the water. There are fish, crabs, and rocks. Rivers grow when it rains a lot.

Deserts

A desert is an area of land that does not receive much rain. A desert is made of hills of sand called dunes. Deserts are usually hot in the day and are cold at night. A tundra is a frozen desert made of ice and snow. A desert has plants, too. In the desert, sometimes there are sandstorms

Mountains

You can learn about mountains by looking at rocks. Mountains have pointy or rounded peaks (new and old). Mountains have different shapes. There are three types of mountains: volcano, folded, and block. Water, snow, and wind cause erosion on mountains. Mountains form when the earth moves.

Rivers

All rivers begin in the mountains, and many streams could make a river. The place where the streams join to make a river is called the mouth. The water flows down. Meander means to wind back and forth. Erosion is when the river washes away the sand, dirt, rocks, and gravel. The Mississippi River is the longest river in the U.S.

Deserts

A desert is an area of land that does not receive much rain. A desert is made of hills of sand called dunes. Deserts are usually hot in the day, and cool at night. A tundra is a frozen desert made of ice and snow. Wind and rain cause the desert’s sand to change form. Salt and gypsum are two minerals that are found in the desert sand. The names of animals in the desert are called kangaroo rat, tarantula, scorpion, horned lizard, desert owl, coyote, and camel. All the animals in the desert need water. For example, the kangaroo rat gets his water from the food he eats.

Mountains

There are three kinds of mountains: block mountains, folded mountains, and volcanoes. There are two types of mountains: old mountains and new mountains. New mountains have pointy peaks and are also tall. Old mountains are shorter, and have rounded peaks. The volcano has lava, and lava is melted rock. A different word for lava is magma. Magma is at the bottom, and lava is at the top of a volcano. If someone touches the magma (or you could call it lava), they will die. The two biggest mountains are Everest in the Himalayas, and Aconcagua in Los Andes, South America.

Rivers

Rivers take rocks, dirt, and gravel. All that is called erosion. The Mississippi River is the longest river in the United States. People use rivers for work and camping. Snow and ice melt into streams. Many streams make a river. Rivers flow down. Rivers are looking for the ocean.

Deserts

The desert is a dry land; it does not have much water. At night it is cold, at daytime it is hot. In the desert there are plants. They are called the barrel cactus and saguaro cactus. Tundra is a desert made of ice and snow. There is dangerous stuff in the desert, like flashfloods and sandstorms. Did you know that there is a city in the desert called Las Vegas? Wind and rain could change the land in the desert.

Mountains

A mountain is a land that is pushed from the energy of the earth. We have three kinds of mountains. They are block mountains, folded mountains, and volcanoes. There are new mountains and old mountains, too. New mountains have pointy peaks, and they are tall. Old mountains have rounded peak, and are low. Lava is hot melted rock. Erosion is the wearing down of the earth’s surface. I could show you the things that make erosion. They are water, rain, wind, ice, and snow. People use mountains for fun and work.
