Lamotte's Topsoil Tour

Preface

The goal of the Topsoil Tour is for students to examine, discover, and compare the physical and chemical properties of soil.

Real Science

The procedres used in the Topsoil Tour are simplified, but similar to those used by soil scientists throughout the world. Tell your students that they are scientists while on the Tour. The Tour introduces the underlying scientific principles of soil science while stimulating curiosity and enthusiasm by involving students in hands-on investigation of their own soil samples.

Your students will become familiar with the chemical concepts of:

  • Dissolving
  • Concentration
  • Reaction
  • Extraction
  • Dilution

Active participation in this project involves the processes of:

  • Observing
  • Communicating
  • Comparing
  • Measuring
  • Organizing & Classifying
  • Relating
  • Analyzing & Summarizing
  • Applying

Safety

The TesTab reagents used in the Topsoil Tour are designed with safety in mind. The single-unit, foil packaged TesTabs are easy to distribute and dispense. The single-test packaging minimizes the amount of material ever in the hands of an individual student. Store TesTabs in a safe place and only hand them out when ready for immediate use.

Outline

This outline divides the Topsoil Tour into seven units. The activities in each unit introduce new skills and reinforce the skills learned in the previous unit. The test procedures include "waiting time" that can be used to reinforce the short lessons and games included in the Tour.
