The Palmer Grave

The Palmer Gravestone
The following account is given according to "Images of America - Leominster" by Thomas Hazzard and Diane Sanabria, on page 77:

Joseph Palmer born in Notown in 1789, made the mistake of appearing in public after a long winter with a full beard. At that time most men were clean-shaven.

Palmer was denounced from the pulpit and was eventually jailed for assult when he slashed two men who were attempting to shave him.

Palmer was imprisoned for a year, refusing to leave without an official statement that he had a right to wear a beard. He had to be carried out, tied to a chair.
