The Palmer Grave
The Palmer grave is an interesting study on the "culture" of the times. At this gravesite in Evergreen Cemetery, Leominster, Massachusetts lies the body of Joseph Palmer who died in 1873. If you click on the gravestone you will see a close-up of the inscription.
Does it seem odd that a person would be "persecuted" for wearing a beard? Was it common for men to wear beards during this time?
Why do you suppose this man was "persecuted" for his beard? Could this have been from family members or from those of the community? How would you investigate to find the answers to these questions?
