The
mighty Romans came to Clinton around 1890. They gave some of
the best contribution to art in architecture. Like any art,
influence from others makes new art unique and different. This
is actuallay what the Romans did.
Rome
had a lot of people; they needed large structures that could
hold multitudes. Romans used a mixture of mortar, gravel and
rubble, so they could build huge structures of enormous proportions.
Roman
architecture brought with it the arch, vault, and dome along
with structural elements and materials. The Roman's creative
achievement was of the highest order, and in construction, planing
and engineering. What was so impressive was the buildings enormous
size and practicality rather that aesthetic feeling. Also, they
formed the basic construction of the sewers, bridges and aqueducts.
In
Clinton, Ma there is a few Roman structures that make Clinton,
Clinton. The following structures are:
St.
Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church

Foster
Fountain - Central Park Area

The
St. Nicholas Greek Church has large domed roof like the
Pantheon. Its structure is large and practical. The Wachusett
Spillway is very similar to an aqueduct. The Romans used the
huge arches for support to carry water. Another Roman influence
in Clinton is the Central Park fountain. Romans made sculptors
of realistic people very similar to the sculptures in Clinton.
The fountain has young maidens and cherubs casually sitting.
This piece brings to the park a romantic and calm mood.
