The Medieval time period was from the 6th to the 19th centuries. The Greek-Roman ideas of balance between the body and the mind were put aside and the main focus became the mind. The Medieval era brought with it a new belief: art became the servant of the church. Medieval theologians believed a church's beauty would inspire parishioners to meditate and believe. Churches were supposed to be more than assembly halls but volumes or ornaments preaching for salvation.

In this time period they produced temples cut from live rock. A unique characteristic was the gargoyle intended to keep evil away from the dwelling. Other characteristics of this time period were with castle like structures, decorated with sculptures that were airy and bright and they had ribbed groin vaults. Warfare was common in Europe in the Middle Ages. Monarchs and nobles built castles as a form of defense. Typical castles have outer walls surrounding a moat. The innermost and strongest part of a medieval castle was the keep. Two examples of this style are the Tower of London and the London Bridge. The most famous Medieval building is the Notre Dame Cathedral. Medieval houses typically had tent-like frames, wattle-and-daub walls, and pitched roofs.

Many of these characteristics go with some of the buildings in Clinton, MA such as the Town Hall, Unitarian Church, and the Baptist Church. The Town Hall has extravagant gargoyles hanging from the bell tower. In fact this is the only building with gargoyles in the town of Clinton.
