The
Clinton High School Art Class researched various architectural
designs and styles as part of the Visual Treasures project using
Under Every Roof by Patricia
Brown Glenn as a base text supplied for the project
by CUBE. The
following is a publication of the efforts that went into this
project.
Introduction
Homes
and buildings around the world are all very different and unique.
They come from different styles, time periods, and backgrounds,
and they all have their own characteristics and qualities. Sometimes
the way a house or building looks evolves out of a certain tradition.
Foreigners came to America using their own style of building,
but also transformed the way their buildings looked by considering
the weather, the way of the land, and the materials they could
build with and the techniques they could use. Over time, the
look and style of homes and buildings evolved, and therefore
became a big part of our architectural heritage. People in all
parts of the United States have created houses that speak about
their culture, what they find beautiful, and the patterns of
their family life. Houses built in a certain place at a certain
time period often have similar characteristics. These variations
reflect the taste and the building customs of different places.
The
design and construction of structure in shelter have reflected
and met the needs of cultures from the earliest times. Greeks
used open-air spaces; Romans needed interior spaces; Gothic
architects met the need for worship space; Twentieth century
architects built to meet the needs of a more industrial society,
designing commercial buildings and factories. Architects have
continued to satisfy current requirements, embellishing and
designing their products to suit the styles of their particular
time period.
The
main purpose of this project is to develop knowledge of the
history of architecture hence an appreciation for architecture.
The town of Clinton, Massachusetts has a variety of architectural
styles such as Greek, Roman, Medieval, Gothic, Romanesque, Greek
Revival, Gothic Revival and 20th Century. Each one of these
styles will be identified, by using a picture of at least one
building that represents it, in the town of Clinton. In this
project, each student was given one specific time period to
study. From there, we researched our time periods, learning
what the different styles looked like in a particular time in
history. We became familiar with each style, and were even able
to find buildings in our town that reflected the types of styles
that we studied. However, very slowly, the town of Clinton is
evolving, as any other place would, into a more industrialized
and modern town. We are hoping that by the end of this project,
more people will become aware of the different styles that can
be all around in any town.
