BirdHabitatStudent PublishingMiddleboro Students Study PenguinsPenguins on Viewby Anita RodriguezAfter a month's long study of penguins, the students in Room 16 at the Mayflower School, Southern House designed with their families sculptures of penguins. They were free to choose which type of materials and form they would use to complete this home-school connection. The final products were of outstanding quality. Once their sculpture was complete the students were then to write a report on the species of penguin that they sculptured. Some of the species included King, Emperor, Adelie, Rockhoppers, Macaroni and Gentoo penguins. The students reports were then edited at school and typed to be put onto display for their classmates. The students had placed so much effort into their projects, they wanted to share their knowledge with other children. We then brain-stormed how we could achieve this new goal. We came up with the idea that the library is a location that many children as well as adults visit on a daily basis. They had then requested that their products be put on display at our local library. One of our town librarians, Mrs. Brown soon agreed with the idea. She then told us we could show case our penguins for a few weeks in the main entrance ways of the library for all to view. It made us feel good that we could share in this effort in a joint manner. The penguins have added a seasonal touch to the library and have given the students a feeling of public recognition. This final stage of our penguin unit ended on an worthwhile and unexpected experience. I'm sure the impact of the public viewing will be the impetus for future community involvement for these students.
